Each society, organisation and individual providing a dataset to be accessed on this website owns absolutely all the Intellectual Property Rights or other like proprietary rights to the Data concerned. All other Intellectual Property Rights or other like proprietary rights and database rights to the contents of this website are reserved to the Federation of Family History Societies (Publications) Limited.

Some groups (and individuals) are failing to recognize the British Laws on Copyright. They are buying indexes, transcriptions and other information and publishing it on the Internet without permission. You may not publish or sell any portion of the data, in printed, electronic, or any other format, without prior written consent of the copyright holders. E-mailing part of the data resulting from a look-up is regarded as publishing in printed or electronic format.

The British Copyright Council & Copyright Licensing Agency have laid down a guideline as to what constitutes "a reasonable proportion of any work", as referred to in The Copyright, Design and Patents Act 1988 (c.48). They state that most UK authors and publishers consider it fair for an individual to make a single copy of up to 5% of the total work for the purposes of research or private study.

Look-ups entail making an additional copy or copies of the single copy originally obtained. There is a significant difference between doing the odd look-up as a favour to a friend, and a look-up service publicly offered to all subscribers to a Mailing List or visitors to a web-site. The latter is an inducement to use the look-up service rather than to pay for the original copyrighted data.
