Wiltshire Removal Orders

[return to the page you were on before]

Introduction

Removal Orders in the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office are indexed there by parish and the name of one person, usually the head of a household, on the document. This database contains records for all named persons so the order may be found using the name of a spouse or child as well as that of the head. The orders in the collection include persons arriving in a parish as well as those being sent away. Some of the orders are annotated with notes on examinations which modified the order, many delaying the removal because of illness or while a woman was pregnant.

Transcription and conventions used

The database includes the following fields:-

  • County – always WIL.
  • Surname
  • Forenames
  • Head – a “y” in this field indicates the person is indexed in the Record Office catalogue. Normally one person per document, usually the head of the household
  • Ref – each document has been given a unique number in the database to enable assembly of all people named in that document into a group
  • Date
  • Age – not always given
  • From – the parish in which a person or family is living or has an abode and which is trying to send that person or family back to the parish of settlement
  • To – the parish of settlement where the person or family has a legal right to reside, usually the place of birth, place of marriage to a settled parishioner, place of apprenticeship, has a property with an annual rental value over £10 or where he had held an official parish role.
  • Notes – anything relevant including information that will not fit in other fields because it is incomplete or doubtful
  • WSRO ref – the reference for the document in the catalogue at the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office.
