Transcription and conventions used

This index consists of 103,135 names taken from Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates and similar records donated to the Birmingham and Midland Society of Genealogy and Heraldry as being unrelated to the donor's research. The records fall into several categories:

  • Birth, Marriage, Death and Adoption Certificates
  • Forces Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates
  • Consular Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates
  • Baptisms, Marriages, Banns and Burials from Parish Registers, etc.
  • Names mentioned in Wills
  • Miscellaneous holdings

The records are grouped under the ref or index no.

Most of the records are taken from official certicates. A few are taken from other official records. For example a photocopy of a Parish Register.

Coverage

The coverage is world-wide, but for convenience the data is divided into five indexes:

  • Birth, Baptisms and Adoption records (46,593)
  • Marriage records (37,688)
  • Death and Burial records (18,650)
  • Names mentioned in wills (160)
  • Miscellaneous holdings (44)

The type of record in the results will indicate if the information comes from Forces or Consular records, if they are not normal records of Civil Registration.

Checking

This information is unchecked.

Grouping

The names on one certificate form a group.

Abbreviations and Codes

A number of abbreviations and codes have been used, notably Chapman County codes.

A 'd' against the age signifies that the person was dead at the time the certificate or record was produced (This usually relates to a deceased father of the bride or groom). FA indicates of 'Full Age' (allegedly over the age of 21). Ages are not always quoted in records.
