Breconshire Marriage Index (1813-1837)

Transcription and conventions used

This database includes information about 8,311 marriages that took place in the county of Breconshire between the years of 1812 and 1837.

The marriages were extracted from the relevant parish registers except where there were obvious ‘gaps’ in the records or where details of individual marriages were difficult to read. In such cases the appropriate bishop’s transcript(s) were used to form as complete a record as possible of every marriage which took place within the county of Breconshire for the period concerned.

The following information is recorded for each marriage:

  • Groom’s surname and forename(s)
  • Date of marriage
  • Parish where married
  • Whether by licence or banns [L = by licence; blank = by banns]
  • Bride’s surname and forename(s)
  • Notes containing various other information shown in the marriage entry

The names of the parishes where the marriages took place follow the standardised spelling most frequently used. There is more than one ‘accepted’ form of spelling for many parishes.

In the ‘Notes’ column information relating to the groom is preceded by ‘Gr-’ and information relating to the bride is preceded by ‘Br-’. The most frequent information of this sort is the parish of origin of one or other of the parties marrying - if they came from a parish other than the one where the marriage took place. In such cases the place names are recorded as spelled in the original entry. Occupations for grooms are often shown as is the marital status of one or other of the parties if they were previously married i.e. ‘wid’ = widow and ‘widr’ = widower.

Sometimes the precise date of a marriage is uncertain in the original register and an estimated date is then given for indexing purposes with further details in the ‘Notes’ column.

In some cases the parties marrying have multiple forenames and these are often then recorded in the ‘Notes’ column.

In rare cases certain names may be unclear and this is shown in the ‘Notes’ column with the marriage sometimes indexed twice - once for each of two possible spellings.

The witnesses to marriages have NOT been recorded for the purposes of this index.
