Transcription and conventions used

This database contains over 6,000 references to people mentioned on gravestones and other memorials in 13 parishes in County Durham and Northumberland.

The records include:

  • The location where the memorial was found, including the name of the burial ground and any information about the denomination of those interred
  • The text of the inscription, preceded by a reference number
  • Any comments on the type of the stone
  • The title, forenames and surname of the person searched found
  • The date of death, where given, in day month year format
  • The age at death, where given
  • The date of birth, where given, in day month year format
  • The section and plot within the burial ground where appropriate
  • Any further notes
  • The year of birth, either estimated from the age at death or that given

Note: In some cases, each face of a memorial has been treated as a separate memorial

Coverage

The current index includes the following parishes. The number of entries and the years covered are shown for each parish. There is often more than one burial ground in a parish.

All the data is checked against the original transcription after data entry. The data has not been rechecked against the gravestones and memorials, although the original transcription may have been checked against the original inscription.

Grouping

These records are not grouped as the full inscription is included in each entry.

Abbreviations and Codes

No specific abbreviations have been used, though some will be found in the inscriptions. Note that Quaker burial inscriptions are normally uniform within a burial ground and months are numbered, e.g. 9th Mo is September (unless before 1753?)
