Lincolnshire Parish Indentures - Apprentice and Master

[return to the page you were on before]

Transcription and conventions used

The information contained herein has, in the main, been extracted from Parish Documents deposited at the Lincolnshire Archives Office, Lincoln, England.

Each document examined is an actual original indenture usually written on paper but sometimes on parchment. The half that has survived at the Lincolnshire Archives Office is the half kept by the churchwardens and overseers in the parish chest as proof of the apprenticeship. The other half was given to the master, who gave it to the apprentice as proof at completion of the training. If, for instance, someone was interested in an indenture where the source is “Coningsby Parish“ they would need to look at the Coningsby parish deposit at the Lincolnshire Archives.

Where there were problems with an indenture and the judiciary was involved these sometimes ended up in the Quarter Sessions. The Quarter Sessions data is from the files of papers created at each Quarter Sessions that was held between 1700 and about 1846. These are public documents rather than “parish“ documents.

Some of the miscellaneous indentures in this data are charity indentures where someone left money in a will for so many poor children to be bound each year or similar. The other miscellaneous ones are odd indentures that have been donated to the Lincolnshire Archives by private individuals or estates.

Private indentures rarely survive as they were not arranged by parish officials so will only have survived in private hands.

Please note: By default all place names in these data are in Lincolnshire. Where otherwise the place name has been suffixed with the appropriate Chapman County code.

For each Indenture the following information has been recorded:-

  • Apprentice Surname: Only complete surnames have been included in these data.
  • Apprentice Forename(s):
  • Apprentice Residence: Usually the abode of apprentice. Not always given so could be blank.
  • Apprentice Trade: The trade to which the apprentice was committed. Not always given so could be blank.
  • Apprentice Comment: Contains apprentice supplementary information. May be blank. May contain the age of the apprentice and/or names of parent(s) or guardian(s). Has also been used to clarify any unclear data, for example an unclear apprentice surname would be suffixed with a question mark ? and if there was an obvious alternative a duplicate entry under the alternative surname has been recorded.
  • Master Surname: Only complete surnames have been included in these data.
  • Master Forename(s):
  • Parish of Master: Not always given so could be blank.
  • Trade of Master: Not always given so could be blank.
  • Master Comment: Has been used to identify any unclear data, for example an unclear surname and/or year would be suffixed with a question mark ?.
  • Source: In the main this is the name of the Parish Deposit held at the Lincolnshire Archive Office. Otherwise it is the reference identifier to a Lincolnshire Archives deposit.
  • Year: In a few rare instances this field may be blank.
  • County: The Chapman code for Lincolnshire i.e. LIN
