Transcription and conventions used

The transcription consists of 112,085 marriages from the registers deposited in Hereford Record Office, but also including some entries submitted as strays to Herefordshire Family History Society.

Note: images have been provided for some Herefordshire parishes. These show an image of the church – NOT not the parish register.

The index includes the following fields - there may be more information in the original record:-

• Groom's surname and forenames.
• Bride's surname and forenames.
• Date (separate fields for day, month and year)
• Place of marriage - sometimes called the 'parish'. Images are available for some locations.
• County of marriage - Chapman code relating to place, usually HEF for Herefordshire.
• Licence - a note if the marriage was by licence, rather than by having the banns called.
• Notes - any further information
  + is a reference to the Groom (male) while
  = is a reference to the Bride (female).

Note that records may appear more than once when there are alternative interpretations of one or more of the names. In this case, you will be charged for each of the interpretations.

Coverage

The following places or parishes are included in this database.

Checking

All the entries have been checked. However, given the nature of stray entries submitted of Herefordshire people marrying in other counties, these should be treated with greater caution.

Grouping

There are no record groups in this database.

Abbreviations and Codes

The Chapman County codes have been used. The code for Herefordshire is 'HEF'. Other codes are: 'RAD' for Radnorshire, 'SAL' for Shropshire and 'WOR' for Worcestershire.

How to buy

While the Herefordshire to provide many other publications they do not currently provide a version of the Marriage index in any other format.
