This index consists of 136,288 individuals (in 53,799 surname groups)
from the 1891 Census Returns
for the county of Herefordshire and neighbouring parts of adjacent counties.
The data records include:
- Forenames - as enumerated.
- Surname - as enumerated.
- Age in years, m indicates months,
d indicates days, w indicates weeks.
- Parish and County where born, if given.
- Parish and County where enumerated.
- Piece Number - refers to filmed batch of
enumerators' books within the RG12/ classification by the
National Archives, London. (Reference used by all archives holding
these films).
- Folio number - refers to number stamped on page in enumerator's book
and unstamped back of that page.

Grouping
While the records are in as enumerated order there is no information
to group the records into households.
Instead, the opportunity has been taken to form groups by surname.
This may easily result in names being missed but may also help you find
the right reference, so that you can find and examine an image of the
census enumerator's book.
Abbreviations and Codes
Abbreviations used in the Age column of the index: h = hours; d = days; w = weeks; m=months; y = years.
Chapman County Codes have been used for the county where born
and the county of enumeration
e.g. HEF = Herefordshire, BRE = Breconshire, RAD =Radnorshire.
The name of the town (or city) of Hereford as been abbreviated to 'HFD'.
