Essex Memorial Inscription Index (Essex SFH)
[return to the page you were on before]
Transcription and conventions used
The transcriptions result from the patient work of many members of the
Essex Society for Family History over many years. Inscriptions have been
transcribed from all available memorials, whether individual or collective,
wherever they may be found. Not all Essex Parishes have yet been surveyed
nor have all completed transcriptions yet been indexed and checked.
The checked index here consists of 154,807 entries from the 14th century
to the present day from the County of Essex.
Further Parishes will be added as they become available.
The index includes the following fields -
there may be more information in the original record:-
- Name - Forenames and Surname.
- Date - in various formats or may not exist
- MI Ref - reference to full transcription and location data in ESFH
hardcopy and fiche
- Comments - brief additional information (for some entries only)
- Location - usually the Parish.
- Church - or other location
- Denomination - the denomination when the records were registered -
not always a valid assumption.
- County - Chapman code relating to place
- Fiche - whether or not a fiche copy of the Parish data is available
Full Transcriptions, in printed form, are held by the Society at their
Research Centre at the Essex Records Office in Chelmsford. Typically,
these contain a map showing the location and a discription of each memorial
stone or plaque and a transcription of its inscription, as far as it is
readable. It is recommended that users consult the full transcription
and/or the original source to confirm the details.
Copies of the full trancription may be obtained, on request, for 0.85p
+ VAT per item, on supply of the Parish and MI Ref. from this index.
Where available, fiche copies of the whole Parish may be purchased from
the Society. Details of how to buy are given below
or at www.esfh.org.uk .
Coverage
The following places or parishes are included in this database.
Note that there may be more than one church, chapel or burial ground in
each place.
Inscriptions have been recorded and indexed with dates between
1348 and 2003.
