Content and conventions used

This index consists of 272,268 entries from the 1891 Census Returns for the registration district of Lambeth then in the county of Surrey.

The index consists of the following information:

  1. Surname
  2. Forename
  3. Sex (m, f ) shown where the forename is missing, illegible, ambiguous or where only initials are given in the return.
  4. Age in years, months (mt), weeks (wk) or days (da)
  5. Piece number
  6. Folio - the number stamped on the top right hand of the two pages containing the entry suffixed ‘a’ for the obverse and ‘b’ for the verso.
  7. Registration District
  8. Registration Sub-District

Where a name or other information is missing, obscured or totally illegible then the entry is replaced by ‘?’. Where some letters are clear and others are not, the illegible characters are replaced by an elipsis (…) and the others are shown. In some cases a suggested interpretation is given in parenthesis. Entries such as ‘Mrs’, ‘Miss’, ‘infant’, etc are treated as a missing name and replaced by ‘?’ with an entry in the Sex column.

Grouping

These entries have been grouped by surname rather than by household. This means that in many cases but not all a family group can be recovered. The household will not be complete if there is more than one surname in the household, e.g. for an in-law and two neighbouring households will be treated asone if they have the same surname.

Abbreviations and Codes
