How to obtain a certificate

Certificates of birth, death and marriage can be obtained from the Registry Office for the District in which they were issued

Researchers can search this index to identify the Derbyshire names they are looking for, and obtain “Register Entry” & “Reg.Office” numbers from which Derbyshire Registrars can supply the corresponding death certificate.

When using this index to order from one of the following District Offices, please note the following:

  1. the cost of each certificate is £7.00 (from 1st April 2003) - send a Sterling cheque/postal order payable to the Superintendent Registrar ( payable to Derby City Council when the “Reg.Office” is 394) plus a stamped address envelope. Applications sent from outside the UK should enclose two International Reply Coupons with their self-addressed envelope.
  2. the Family Records Centre Index references (formerly available at St Catherine's House) are of no value at Registrars offices. Use only the “Register Entry” & “Reg.Office” numbers from this index, which are appropriate to your order certificate/s
  3. Civil Registration in England and Wales began on July 1st 1837.

It is recommended that family historians apply for certificates by post rather than call casually at the Register Office. Whilst staff will always try to help, they do have other statutory duties to carry out every day and are often very busy with current births, deaths and marriages.

An application request letter must include:

  • the “Register Entry” & “Reg.Office” numbers supplied in the index - this is most important. The “Register Entry” number is the actual page in the Register for your requested certificate & “Reg.Office” number is the Register Office where that Register is held;
  • the name of the deceased person.
