Introduction

This database is a Name Index to the Reports of the Relieving Officer of the Derby Board of Guardians of the DERBY UNION WORKHOUSE. The reports are a mine of information for Family & Local Historians. A more comprehensive description can be found on the Derbyshire FHS web site at www.dfhs.org.uk/publics/wkhouses.htm.

Transcription and conventions used

This index is limited to Surname, Forename, Age and a Reference. The reference can be used to obtain more information directly from the Derbyshire Family History Society.

The information associated with the reference/surname give Age, Parish of Settlement, Area Of Residence, Trade, Employer, Cause of the application for relief, Relief ordered to be given, Relieving officers comments, Comments of the board and the actual order made or relief given. The records include both outdoor and indoor relief, and also include people who originate from outside Derbyshire.

Coverage

The transcribed records only date from June 1842 to December 1842, but for such a short period they contain 2235 names and associated data.
