Transcription and conventions used

The Northern Yorkshire and Southern Durham parish register data will be constantly updated for this site as transcripts are computerised.

The data include, if found in the original record, the following:

  • Date of event - for banns, date of publishing is given.
  • Surname - both bride and groom are given separate entries. Search on variations of spelling.
  • Forename(s) - as seen, though in some cases these have been abbreviated due to space restrictions. Search on variations of spelling.
  • Spouse details - eg status, occupation, place of residence.
  • Abode - some place names have been standardised to assist the searcher.
  • Banns or Licence - banns are included if no marriage took place or the information differed greatly from the marriage entry.
  • Witnesses - sometimes divided between bride & groom entries. Recommend both entries are searched for full listing.
  • Notes - extra information found with entries.
  • Place of Event - town, parish, village, hamlet.
  • County - Chapman County Code is used.

The following conventions are used:

  • Square brackets [ ] indicate an alternative or addition given to assist the searcher.
  • ‘.?’ – indicates where writing was totally illegible.
  • ‘.’ – indicates a blank in the record.
  • ‘?’ – transcriber and checker unsure of entry e.g. Frances? or a possible source mistake.

These records are the transcription work over many years of a large number of local voluntary members of the Cleveland, N. Yorks & South Durham Family History Society to whom we give our thanks.
