Transcription and conventions used
These databases consists of 54,061 baptism entries from the registers of parishes in North Yorkshire and County Durham. This is an ongoing project.
The data records include:
- Surname – in some entries the mother’s maiden name is shown in capitals enclosed in brackets. Search on variations.
- Forename(s) – as seen. Search on variations.
- Date of event – in some cases date of birth is also given
- Relationship
- Parents – in some cases their origin is shown and their occupation
- Abode – some place names have been standardised to assist the searcher
- Notes – these can include godparents, sponsors and other details
- County – for out of county parents Chapman County Code is used eg. DUR = Durham
- Place of Event – town, parish, village, hamlet.
- Square brackets [ ] indicate an alternative or addition given to assist the searcher.
- ‘…?’ indicates where writing was illegible
- ‘?’ – transcriber and checker unsure of entry eg Frances? or a possible source mistake.
For Northern Yorkshire the area of interest covers the region round Middlesbrough to Whitby on the east coast, across the North Yorks Moors to Thirsk then across county to the upper Dales in the west.
These records are the transcription work over many years of a large number of local voluntary members of the Cleveland, N. Yorks & South Durham Family History Society to whom we give our thanks.
Coverage
For Southern Durham the area of interest covers the region approximately north of Hartlepool on the North East coast across the county to Middleton in Teesdale and environs. Also the east of Stockton then following the River Tees to west of Barnard Castle.

Checking
This data has been checked, except for three parishes marked above (where a lower charge is made).
The checking of data against the parish registers /Bishops Transcripts by a select number of local experts (other than transcribers) is an ongoing part of the project.
Grouping
These records are not grouped.
Abbreviations and Codes
The following abbreviations have been used.
- d = daughter
- s = son
- f = female
- m = male
- jnr = junior
- snr = senior
- bach = bachelor
- spr = spinster or single woman
- ill = illegitimate
- wks = weeks
- lab = labourer
Chapman County Codes have been used in some cases e.g. NRY = North Riding of Yorkshire, YKS = Yorkshire, DUR = County Durham, NBL = Northumberland.
