Cleveland, N. Yorkshire & S. Durham FHS provide indexes offering comprehensive coverage of the area of interest of the society for the 1851 and 1891 census.
Transcription and conventions used
This index consists of 580,021 entries from the 1891 Census Returns for the counties of Durham and Yorkshire.
The Northern Yorkshire and Southern Durham 1891 Census Index is believed to be complete.
The records include:
- County – county of enumeration as a Chapman County Code i.e. NRY = North Riding of Yorkshire: DUR = County Durham. Note:The county is based on the piece number but some piece numbers cover areas in both North Yorkshire and South Durham.
- Reg. District – The registration district used for census purposes.
- Place of Enumeration – the area corresponding to the piece number.
- Surname – as enumerated.
- Forename(s) – as enumerated.
- Age Male – Age in years if male, ‘m’ indicates months, ‘d’ indicates days, ‘w’ indicates weeks
- Age Female – similar to age for male.
- Birth Place – usually town, parish, village, hamlet. Some spelling altered to assist searcher. ‘Brit Subj’ – British Subject born in foreign country is included where found in original entry.
- Birth County – county of birth as a Chapman County Code e.g. YKS = Yorkshire: DUR = County Durham.
- Piece Number – refers to filmed batch of enumerators’ books within the RG12/ classification by the National Archives, London. (Reference used by all archives holding these films).
- ‘?’ indicates a possible enumeration mistake. Square brackets [ ] indicate an alternative or addition given to assist the searcher
- ‘…?’ indicates where writing was illegible
- ‘?’ – transcriber and checker unsure of entry e.g. Frances?
This Index is based on the transcription work over many years of a large number of local voluntary members of the Cleveland, N. Yorks & South Durham Family History Society.
Coverage
For Southern Durham the area of interest covers the region approximately north of Hartlepool on the North East coast across the county to Middleton in Teesdale and environs. Also the east of Stockton then following the River Tees to west of Barnard Castle.
For Northern Yorkshire the area of interest covers the region round Middlesbrough to Whitby on the east coast, across the North Yorks Moors to Thirsk then across county to the upper Dales in the west.

Grouping
These records can not be grouped into households as the index does not include relationship to head of household or schedule number and the records have been supplied sorted by name.
Abbreviations and Codes
Abbreviations used in the Age column of the index: h = hours; d = days; w = weeks; m=months; y = years.
Chapman County Codes have been used for the county of birth and the County where the enumeration took place e.g. NRY = North Riding of Yorkshire, YKS = Yorkshire, DUR = County Durham.
